What was once part of the former Somerset power plant complex is now being eyed by a New York City-based solar energy investment group for a massive solar farm.
Somerset Solar LLC wants to take slightly more than 700 acres of vacant - but former power plant land - along Lake Road and develop into one of the largest solar farm projects in recent Niagara County history.
The Somerset project could see a 125mw solar farm developed - generating enough green energy power to service 23,750 homes.
Somerset Solar will be investing nearly $277 million in the project, which also represents a significant private sector investment.
Additionally, it may help - economically - revitalize what had been fallow former power plant property.
"When these projects like this are done hand-in-hand with the host community, there is nothing to sniff at," said Craig Turner, Niagara USA Chamber of Commerce interim executive director.
The Town of Somerset has already backed the project.
The Niagara County Industrial Development Agency is also working with Somerset Solar on a series of incentives that are critical for the project to advance. A formal vote from the agency's directors could happen in March.
Turner said the project fits into New York's drive to create more green energy options for consumers.
"It speaks the right language," Turner said.
New York state's public service commission must also sign off on the project.
Pending various state and local approvals, construction could start this summer.
