(WBEN) - The New York State Thruway Authority unanimously voted Monday to pass a toll hike that will increase rates starting this upcoming January.

The toll hike will be 5% for E-ZPass holders, but more significantly will increase the current 30% Tolls By Mail rate differential to a 75% differential above what E-ZPass users pay.

Another 5% increase will then occur on Jan. 1, 2027.

A trip from Buffalo to Albany currently costs an E-ZPass user $12.18. In 2024, that will increase to $12.78, and in 2027, to $13.41. For non E-ZPass users, that trip would cost $23.47.

The increase is forecasted to generate an additional $826 million of toll revenue over the next four years.
