AMHERST, N.Y. (WBEN)....Tucked into a quiet Amherst neighborhood is People Inc's new respite home - something that already has a waiting list even before it officially opens.

The 12-bed facility doubles People Inc.'s current six-bed respite house and serves as a place where its clients can spend a night, or two, to give their caregivers or family members a brief break.

"Caregiving can be difficult," said Assemblywoman Karen McMahon. "You do need a break sometimes."

Anne McCaffery, People Inc. president and CEO, said the larger respite home was created because of demand.

People Inc. invested $775,000 to renovate the ranch-style house with a picturesque-like yard located at 80 Acacia Road in Amherst's Sweet Home neighborhood.

"This is more than just providing some nice space for our clients," McCaffery said. "Respite is essential."

Respite services is one of the most requested from People Inc. clients, McCaffery said. For care givers, it provides them with a break break but for families, it provides something equally important.

"Peace of mind," McCaffery said.

The home will have a 24/7 staff on site. It is designed for short term care - usually a day or two, McCaffery said.

Funding for the Acacia Respite Home came from the People Inc. Foundation and the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation Legacy Fund at the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo.
