
Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Buffalo Police announced the arrest of two individuals on Tuesday in relation to a burglary that took place this past Thursday night at the Buffalo Naval Park.
At approximately 11:20 p.m. EST, Central District detectives in the area responded to a call of a burglary in progress at the Naval Park along the Buffalo River.
Upon arrival, detectives observed two subjects walking in an opposite direction from the scene on Oak Street near Genesee Street, brandishing firearms. Officers apprehended both subjects and recovered two vintage pistols from the USS Littlerock.
The weapons recovered were both Colt 45 1911 handguns, which were allegedly taken during the burglary.
Abdikfi Saleh, 18, of Buffalo and Tyler Newman, 19, of Buffalo were arraigned on Friday and charged identically with one count of Burglary in the Second Degree (Class "C" felony), one count of Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Third Degree (Class "D" felony) and one count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon (Class "A" misdemeanor).
Saleh and Newman are scheduled to return to court on Thursday, Feb. 8 at 2 p.m. EST for a felony hearing. Prosecutors requested that the defendants be remanded, but both were released under supervision.
If convicted of the highest count, Saleh and Newman face a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.
Newman also has a separate pending criminal case after being arraigned in Erie County Court on Dec. 1, 2023 on an indictment charging him with one count of Robbery in the Second Degree (Class “C” violent felony).
It is alleged that on June 30, 2023 at approximately 10:15 p.m. EST, the defendant, while acting in concert with a co-defendant and juvenile offender, forcibly stole property from an individual on South Buffalo Street in the Village of Springville. The defendants are accused of hitting and kicking the victim in order to steal his backpack, which contained various personal property.
The victim was treated for minor injuries at Bertrand Chaffee Hospital in Springville.
At the arraignment, prosecutors requested the defendant be held on $50,000 bail. Judge Kenneth Case continued his release under supervision.
Newman is scheduled to return to court for this case on Thursday, Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. EST for a pre-trial conference.
The Erie County District Attorney's Office intends to file a motion pursuant to CPL 510.10(4)(t) to request the Court revoke his bail on the robbery charge and hold the defendant without bail for allegedly committing a felony involving harm to an identifiable person or property while he was released on a pending felony charge.
