BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) In the midst of the annual Radiothon for the SPCA Serving Erie, County on Thursday, an animal transport arrived at the shelter with 20 dogs, including 14 puppies.

"We call everything mixed breed now," said SPCA Chief Communications Offiicer Gina Lattuca. "If we were forced to break it down, I would say there are pit bull terrier mixes and labrador retriever and shepard mixes. It's pretty rare that we get puppies."

Lattuca said some of the older pups, over 4 months of age, may go up for adoption right away. Anyone interested in the younger pups should watch the SPCA's adoptable animal page to see when they will become available.

The transport arrived from Aiken, South Carolina. The Erie County shelter is a transport partner to help relieve overcrowded shelters due to seasonal high intake, short-staffing, and a shortage of shelter veterinarians in different regions of the country.

The SPCA Serving Erie County is celebrating 20 years of the Radiothon this year. Former SPCA Board President Larry Robb came up with the fundraiser in 2002.

"I was General Manager of Entercom Radio and Board President at the SPCA at the time. I modeled it after a Radiothon for Children's Hospital. The first year we had an incredible response. It energized the staff. It was both emotional and wonderful. It was probably the best thing I ever did in my life," he said.

In the past 19 years of the Radiothon, over 2.7 million dollars has been raised for the SPCA Serving Erie County.

The SPCA is asking donors to consider becoming an Angel for the Animals, a $20 a month commitment for 12 months. It can be a one time gift, or spread out throughout the year.

The SPCA cares for approximately 12-thousand animals each year.
