Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - For the second night in-a-row, a torrid summer rainfall flooded streets and basements, especially in North Buffalo and the Northern suburbs like Kenmore and Town of Tonawanda.
And a near record rainfall was recorded by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Buffalo. Their airport office reported 1.77 inches of rain fell between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. - the second-most in a one-hour period in Western New York since the service began keeping records in 1943.
Only an Aug. 15, 1915 rainfall when 1.93 inches fell in one hour topped Thursday's total.
Between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m., 3.04 inches of rain fell - mostly in the Northern suburbs - according to the National Weather Service.
Kenmore had the local record with 3.29 inches of rain fall.
And in North Buffalo, city firefighters had to rescue six stranded motorists, whose cars were flooded in viaducts along Elmwood Avenue, Delaware Avenue and Parkside.
Several homeowners also reported flooded basements.
"It has been a busy night," said Ben Swanekemp, Buffalo deputy mayor.
Thursday's rainfall came 24 hours after severe weather swept across the Western New York region, dropping a total of three confirmed EF-1 tornados in Niagara, Orleans and Genesee counties.
