Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Buffalo Common Councilman Rasheed Wyatt is the latest name to enter the race for Mayor of Buffalo.
The University District Councilman announced his candidacy on social media Monday morning, with a full campaign announcement set to come late Monday afternoon on Hertel Avenue.
"Thank you to the hundreds of people who urged me to run for this Office, and for your belief in me. I am humbled and honored," said Wyatt on his Facebook page on Monday. "Now the process begins, and I need you to join me in restoring City Hall to the people. ... Our city is in crisis, and it will take all of us. ... Please join me for this important announcement, as we begin to create a vision that will restore the faith in our city government for 'Real Change'!"
During his announcement speech late Monday afternoon, Wyatt criticized past administrations for ignoring the community, and pledged to prioritize accountability and efficiency.
"I ain't changing nothing, and I'm going to stand 10-toes down for every person in the City of Buffalo who feel like we don't care," said Wyatt on Monday. "Because when we talk about taking fluoride in the water and our children suffering with teeth, when we talk about affordable housing, and we keep on making excuses when we supposed to be inspecting these houses. We have a law to inspect 5,000 a year. We don't inspect none, then we wonder why people feel like they feel."
Wyatt stressed the need for collaboration and transparency, aiming to create a city where everyone feels heard and represented.
Wyatt joins State Sen. Sean Ryan and former Buffalo Fire Commissioner Garnell Whitfield Jr. as candidates to have formally declared for the 2025 mayor's race.
