Castile, N.Y. (WBEN) - The fall foliage at Letchworth State Park put on quite a show and led to parking problems and restrictions at the popular wonder known as the 'Grand Canyon' of the east.
Before noon both Saturday and Sunday the parking lots were full and traffic was slowed at the park's gated entrances as the park operations staff navigated both a peak fall weekend and COVID restrictions.
"We are are at reduced capacity," said Angela Berti with the New York State Parks. "We have social distance ambassadors, or staff, walking around trying to keep people spaced out," Berti told WBEN. No permits have been issued for large events as another way of controlling crowding in the 17-mile park.
Bertie says parks in general across the state have been a big draw during the COVID pandemic as they allow for outdoor relaxation and recreation in a safe manner.
"Our parks will remain open as long as it's safe to."
