Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - A few hours a month. That's all it takes to make a difference in a child's life through Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS).
"Mentoring is needed more than ever in our community," Big Brothers Big Sisters CEO Emily Mahoney told Susan Rose.
Mahoney is being recognized as 'Selfless Among Us' this month for her efforts in bringing together mentors and mentees in Western New York.
"One in three children in the United States is growing up without a mentor. Our organization's mission is to find people in the community who are willing to donate time to provide guidance and support that these kids are looking for."
In 2023, BBBS served about 320 local children in one to one mentoring relationships. Mahoney is looking to grow that impact considerably this year and in the coming years.
At any given time, they have about 120 children on a waiting list.
Mahoney has many stories of impactful relationships, but one in particular stands out.
"Cam was 12 when he met his Big Brother Mike. He was struggling in school and his mom really wanted someone to help him with challenges he was facing. I recently connected with Cam and he is doing wonderfully. He graduated from ECC and will be studying nursing this fall."
Mahoney said they did the normal things. They went to a Bison's game and were out and about. But Mike also helped Cam get his first job. He taught him how to drive and he was a consistent role model in his life.
"The best part is that he's still connected with Mike. Cam graduated from our program in 2020. They both talk about how they help each other become better people and they're both very much connected to our mission," Mahoney noted.
Mentors need to be 18. There's no limit on the other end as long as you can commit to seeing a child a few times a month.
"I think the word 'mentor' can be overwhelming," said Mahoney. "We're looking for people in the community that have kind hearts and extra time to donate to a child. You don't have to have every answer. We have a wonderful staff to help you."
She said people who get involved with the Big Brother Big Sister family very often stay connected and see the value of the program for the rest of their life.

On being recognized as 'Selfless Among Us,' Mahoney said "it's overwhelming in many ways. Our volunteers and our families are the selfless ones. They trust us to come into their lives. We're honored to be a part of the magic . Being here for 15 years, I'm so appreciative and grateful to West Herr Auto Group."
