Newfane, N.Y. (WBEN) - Newfane crews have spent the last few days repairing a sewer main break that sent sewage water into Olcott Harbor. The town's supervisor says this should not affect Olcott Beach later this year.
Supervisor John Syracuse says the town has been working in conjunction with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), which advised him it wanted the effluent to not be leaked into the harbor.
"What we've been doing is we've amassed a few septic haulers on the east side of the harbor, and they're hauling out the effluent, and we have a few others on the west side of the harbor working out of another pump station, so there is no more leaking of the effluent, the untreated waste, going into the harbor," said Syracuse with WBEN.
He says crews are waiting for a part to come in so crews can fix the sewer line, and that should arrive by Tuesday morning.
For those who like to swim at Olcott Beach, Syracuse says there should not be an issue.
"The hydrology of the harbor should take care of all of that effluent, and there should be no remnant effect to the waters of Lake Ontario, especially now, since the DEC has given us guidance on how we should be handling the effluent so it doesn't discharge it to into the harbor," Syracuse said.
He adds the water supply is safe to drink as well.
The cause is under investigation.
