(WBEN) - How will gathering limits be enforced on Thanksgiving? The answer depends on who you ask.
Governor Cuomo's Executive Order limiting home gatherings to 10 people has caused some to question if they should fear being arrested or issued a ticket if they have slightly more. Cuomo has said that it is up to local law enforcement agencies to enforce those rules.
Peter Kehoe, Executive Director of the New York State Sheriffs' Association said that he believes the Governor has put law enforcement agencies across the state in to an impossible situation.
"What he's really done is hoist this off on law enforcement and say if there's more than 10 people (in a home) and you get sick on Thanksgiving, that's the Sheriff's fault," Kehoe said. "That's been his whole approach to this, to push responsibility off from him and on to the Sheriffs."
Instead, Kehoe believes that it would work better to encourage New Yorkers to follow health guidelines rather than threaten with punishment, and other than that the message is quite similar.
"We encourage people to use common sense. Don't join in big crowds, don't have people coming from all over the country to your home," Kehoe said. "We're not going to come in and see how many people are there. We trust your common sense, and we think you know as much about what's good for you as the Governor does."
