Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - A new Siena poll released Wednesday shows among likely voters, former President Donald Trump leads current President Joe Biden by six points. Pollsters say they infer voters believe Trump won last week's debate.
Pollster Don Levy says Trump scored a gain of about three points since Siena's last poll prior to the debate.
"I'm sure that many are saying in the Democratic circles, that there hasn't been a fundamental shift in the polling, what we see is an incremental shift. Seeing a horse race move of three points is not uncommon, in a post debate, environment where one candidate is seen to have one and the other as seen as a loss," said Levy in an interview with WBEN.
Levy adds the poll found Trump did better in the debate, 61%-23%.
Levy says a front-and-center issue coming from the debate was Biden's age, and his mental fitness to operate as president.
"We asked about age in this poll, 74% of all voters told us they simply think that Joe Biden right now is too old to be an effective president. That's up five points from the last time that we asked that question. We asked it about Donald Trump as well. There, 42% of voters think he's too old. So over a 30 point gap in the relevance of age, certainly, that's a number that is worthy of of concern amongst the Biden backers," Levy noted.
The poll also found 69% of Americans say the country is moving in the wrong direction. That's bad news for an incumbent.
"It points to the public saying, 'It's time to make a change,'" Levy said.
The poll was conducted in partnership with the New York Times.
