Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - More than 40 Buffalo firefighters were called the General Mills cereal production plant Monday morning when an equipment malfunction sent Lucky Charms ingredients onto the roof where a hot exhaust unit ignited, briefly, the ingredients.

Buffalo Battalion Chief Sean Eagen said the fire was contained to a six-foot by six-foot section of the east side of the 10-story building's roof.

The fire was extinguished in minutes.

"Everything went well," Eagen said. "From the moment we arrived, the General Mills crew had everything mapped out for us."

Eagen said it was a hopper unit that malfunctioned and put the ingredients on the roof next to the exhaust unit.

"In a way, it was like a live training session for us," Eagen said.

The fire was reported at 9:23 a.m. and extinguished before 10 a.m.

Lucky Charms production resumed Monday morning.

Fire damages are estimated at $10,000. Firefighters say the cause is malfunctioning equipment. No one was hurt.
