Amherst, N.Y. (WBEN) - A smoky multiple alarm industrial fire in Amherst filled the sky with thick black smoke rising from the scene.
The fire at PPE, a manufacturing facility on Earhart Drive of Lawrence Bell Drive, was reported during the late afternoon Tuesday.
Thick black smoke rising from the scene could be seen for miles from the fire as multiple fire companies responded to fight the fire.
Nearby businesses in the area were evacuated as a precaution as there were concerns of chemicals inside the PPE facility.
Tuesday evening, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said he was monitoring the fire situation and dedicating state resources to assist the firefighting effort.
Emergency officials in Amherst worked through the night and are expected to update the media on the situation sometime Wednesday morning.
