Olean, N.Y. (WBEN) - St. Bonaventure president Jeff Gingerich made his first public statement on SBU Athletics opting out of the NIT Tournament for the men's basketball team.
"I know many of you are upset with the events that transpired last week regarding the NIT. Quite frankly, I am too," Gingerich began his video message.
Bonnie fans, alums, and students were shocked to learn about it from ESPN.
"You should have been informed of the team's decision on Sunday evening, not three days later," he said.
Gingerich went on to say that the Bona family deserved better. Adding, "it won't happen again." He then asked for their continued support.
"Please continue to support us. We have made remarkable strides over the
last several years to put the university in a position of strength at a time when so many other colleges are struggling to survive. We can't do it without your support."
The decision sparked frustration and outrage from the Bonaventure community and led to the resignation of Athletic Director Joe Manhertz.
