Orchard Park, NY (WBEN) A topping off of the new Highmark Stadium takes place Friday, with construction about halfway to completion.
"Things are going great," says Chief Operating Officer Pete Guelli. "We're about 50 percent done from a construction standpoint," and Friday will mark the ceremony to mark the last piece of steel used for construction.
Guelli says the Bills are entertaining buying nearby land. "It's still preliminary, obviously we're going to keep an eye on every aspect," says Guelli. He says the Bills will operate the property across the street where training facilities will be.
He says part of the plan is to get fans into the stadium sooner. "We don't want to discourage tailgating, that's part of Buffalo. But we'd like to bring people into the perimeter and give them things to do sooner, and this stadium is designed to do that," says Guelli.
Guelli says 70 percent of the lower bowl is sold, and the premium sections and suites are already sold out.
The current stadium is set to be torn down in 2027.
