Thousands of power outages reported as high winds sweep Western New York

More than 12,000 outages combined between NYSEG and National Grid

Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Heavy winds Sunday night and into early Monday morning have caused widespread power outages across Western New York.

According to National Grid's outage map, more than 7,000 customers across Erie, Niagara, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Genesee and Allegany counties are without power, as of 8:30 a.m.

Around 5,000 NYSEG customers are without power, according to their outage map.

Numbers for both NYSEG and National Grid will continue to fluctuate throughout the morning.

High winds will continue throughout Monday and into Tuesday morning with the following advisories posted by the National Weather Service:

WIND ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 AM EDT TUESDAY
* WHAT...South winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph expected this morning. Winds will become southwest late this morning and gusts 40 to 50 mph are expected through tonight.
* WHERE...Niagara, Orleans, Monroe, Northern Erie, and Genesee Counties.
* WHEN...Until 8 AM EDT Tuesday.
* IMPACTS...Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...A lull in the strong winds is expected behind a strong cold front this afternoon. Winds will ramp back up this evening.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high profile vehicle. Secure outdoor objects.

* WHAT...South winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph through midday, becoming west this afternoon through Tuesday morning.
* WHERE...Chautauqua and Southern Erie Counties.
* WHEN...Until 8 AM EDT Tuesday.
* IMPACTS...Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.
