Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Despite heavy rain and high winds, thousands of Western New Yorkers gathered on Sunday for Buffalo's annual St. Patrick's Day Parade downtown.
Acting Mayor Chris Scanlon, who took part in the parade, says it's not only an exciting day for Buffalo, but is also a reminder of the city's deep Irish roots.
"It's a time to reflect on what the Irish people mean to this community. As someone of Irish descent, today's a very important day to me. Obviously, it's a great time to come out and have fun with your family and friends, loved ones, but it's also great time to spread information about Irish heritage, Irish culture, and what Irish people have meant to Buffalo and Western New York, the history of it, whether it's civic engagement, political office, law enforcement or labor, the labor movement in particular, with its relationship to the Erie Canal. It's just a fantastic day to be able to come out celebrate Irish heritage," stated Scanlon.
