Thousands without power as damaging winds slam Western New York

Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - With wind gusts peaking out in the 70-plus mph range, utility companies are reporting tens of thousands of customers without power service.

Fallen trees and downed utility poles are the main culprit for the outages that span the Buffalo-Niagara region.

As of 2 p.m., National Grid reported about 20,000 customers without power across the area.

NYSEG had similar numbers without power, mainly concentrated across Erie County.

National Grid has deployed more than 3,300 line, tree, and public safety specialists to assess damage, clean up debris and restore power to customers caused by the ongoing severe winter storm forecasted to affect Upstate New York through Wednesday.

As of 3 p.m. on Monday, National Grid has restored service to more than 70,800 of the over 112,300 customers affected by the storm.
