Tonawanda, N.Y. (WBEN) - The Town of Tonawanda introduced a new alert system Friday to help residents in the event of an emergency. Supervisor Joe Emminger says you'll have options on how to get them.

Examples of messages sent through Town of Tonawanda Alerts will include severe weather alerts, notifications from the Town of Tonawanda Police Department, the Town Highway Department, Water and Sewer, public utility notifications, general town, and other alerts. The messages can go out either town-wide or to certain targeted neighborhoods within the town that would be impacted by the message.

"The system is for emergency and non-emergency alerts," Supervisor Emminger said. "The alerts could be related to specific hazards that require some kind of action to be taken such as evacuation or shelter in place. Non-emergency alerts could include significant transportation problems with prolonged impacts or significant ongoing police or fire activity."

Subscribers will be asked to provide their address and preferred method(s) of contact. Adding an address will allow tailoring so subscribers do not receive alerts that do not pertain to their geographic area. Town of Tonawanda Alerts will be provided free of charge, however standard text messaging rates and other charges may apply.

To register for Town of Tonawanda Alerts, go to: https://tinyurl.com/TonawandaAlerts. To receive Emergency SMS text messages only, text TownofTonawanada to 38276. There is also a mobile app available through Google Play and the App Store.
