Buffalo, NY (WBEN) Today is primary day in the race for governor. Erie County's Republican elections commissioner anticipates slightly less turnout than the last primary in 2018.

Erie County Republican Elections Commissioner Ralph Mohr says the turnout in 2018 was 27 percent in the race between Andrew Cuomo and Cynthia Nixon. "We're expecting somewhere around a 25% turnout for the gubernatorial elections," says Mohr.

Despite recent events, Mohr doesn't anticipate a large turnout. "Democrats are less likely to show up at the polls on election day, as opposed to Republicans being primary elections for gubernatorial races by party. It really has no effect on one party or the other because they're running individually by the parties," explains Mohr. 11,000 people took part in early voting last week.

Mohr says another primary could generate more interest in August. "There's a Democratic primary against representative Brian Higgins. And there's a Republican primary with regard to the open seat that Chris Jacobs is vacating that has generated a fair amount of interest and I think people will be focusing much more on the August election," predicts Mohr.

There's also a justice race in the town of Cheektowaga on the Democrat and Conservative lines and the Erie County Clerk's race on the Democratic line.
