Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Buffalo police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred just after midnight New Year's Day on Route 33, the Kensington Expressway.
Buffalo police accident investigators say a vehicle was traveling the wrong way on the 33 at the time of the crash.
Investigators say the vehicle was traveling westbound in the eastbound lane near the Jefferson Avenue exit when it crashed nearly head on with another vehicle traveling westbound. Police say a third vehicle, which was also traveling westbound, attempted to avoid the initial crash and struck the other westbound vehicle.
The male drivers involved in the head on collision were transported to ECMC where they were both later declared deceased. A male passenger is being treated in the ICU at ECMC. Authorities say the driver of the third vehicle- suffered non-life threatening injuries.
The 33 was closed for several hours following the accident before reopening.
