BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) - The University at Buffalo held a groundbreaking ceremony Friday for a new sports performance center, being built on the university's North Campus.

The Brittany Murchie Mulla Sports Performance Center, which will connect to the west end of the Murchie Family Fieldhouse, will serve all student-athletes for UB's 14 varsity teams.

"Today, as we break ground on the future home of Brittany Murchie Moolah Sports Performance Center, we look forward to the opportunities it will create for UB student athletes," said UB President Satish Tripathi. "This center represents a significant enhancement to our athletic facilities and therefore, the overall experience of our student-athletes. When completed, it will create a second-to-none facility, so our student-athletes are prepared to compete successfully at a national level in their respective sports."

The new $7.5 million, 12,000-square-foot facility, scheduled to open in the spring of 2024, will double the training space for student athletes and will feature a 18 free-weight training racks, a turf training incline, a cardio mezzanine, a supplemental nutrition area, as well as ample space for offices and a conference room for teams to convene.

"It is truly the foundation for championships, truly the foundation for championships," said Mark Alnutt, UB vice president and director of athletics. "We're gonna have an incredible coaching staff that are going to coach our student-athletes, we're gonna have incredible equipment, and that's where the pathway to championships begin."

The facility is named after the daughter of UB alumni Tunney and Deanna Murchie, who have made several donations to the athletic facilities and programs over the years, which includes $3 million dollars to the fieldhouse that bears their name.
