US/Canada Border to remain closed until June 21

Peace Bridge

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) - The US Department of Homeland Security announced that restrictions on non-essential travel at land borders will continue through June 21, meaning the border restrictions in place between the US and Canada that have been in place for over a year will remain for at least another month.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has not put a timeframe on when he believes the border should reopen, but there have been reports of the idea advancing in recent weeks.

"It is truly unacceptable at this point to have another 30-day extension with no further exceptions for those vaccinated, no goals or targets outlined to expand crossings, no reciprocal allowances for family reunification, and no plan," said Congressman Brian Higgins upon the announcement. "We have made great strides in fighting the pandemic and we need to make progress on reopening the border. That is essential to both families that have been separated for way too long and to our binational economies."

Higgins has pushed for the U.S. to allow Canadians to cross into New York State for COVID vaccine appointments. The border between the United States and Canada first closed to non-essential travel in March of 2020.
