BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) - Joel Northrup was identified as the victim of Monday evening's fatal shooting at Delaware Park.
The gunman has not been arrested in the shooting, though police officials say they are continuing to pull video and are pleading for witnesses to come forward.
"Absolutely unacceptable," Mayor Byron Brown said about the shooting death. "Delaware Park is one of the most well-used parks in our city and our region. People come to Delaware Park from every section of the City of Buffalo. There are hundreds of people at any given time."
Northrup, 26, is from Kenmore. Police said he was shot three times in the targeted shooting near the basketball courts. Dozens of people witnessed the shooting.
"We know that there are people who this individual is," Brown said. "We cannot allow this type of behavior to continue in this community. It puts everyone at risk. It puts us at risk in every part of the city and region that we live in when individuals engage in this kind of horrific and senseless behavior."
No weapon has been retrieved.
Deputy Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia assured the safety of the park and said there will be an increase in patrols at the park.
"There was some form of an argument or fight the day before," Gramaglia said. "We have collected some social media video on that. We are looking to see if that is related or not."
