Village of Hamburg residents seeking answers after several homes flooded last month

"I think all of us have dealt with this for years, but you always think it's just you, and it's so depressing"

Hamburg, N.Y. (WBEN) - After a severe rainstorm late last month caused several homes in the Village of Hamburg to flood, residents seek to get an explanation from village officials.

During a board meeting on Monday, it was revealed that the sanitary and storm-water drainage systems became overwhelmed with the amount of rain coming down, which caused the overflow to flood people's basements.

Although this may not be the situation for every home, village officials said they will provide more information when it becomes available.

One of the homeowners, Gabrielle, says there isn't many options available for her to prevent this from happening again in the future, and it's up to the village to keep the systems from getting overwhelmed.

"Luckily, I have insurance. I have my copay, but from the initial mitigation, they had to pump out the water, then they had to clean the floors and sanitize them," said Gabrielle in an interview with WBEN. "So far the estimate I got is about $5,000. I've lost about $6,000 worth of materials and now I'm about to have another quote given to me to fix the basement floor and repair some damage to a wall."

In a few extreme cases, some residents claim the flood caused over $20,000 worth of damage.

At the meeting, some residents expressed their shock when they found out they weren't the only ones with flood damage.

"'Why haven't we heard about this before?' It sounds to me like maybe you have heard, you know, a little scattered here and there. But to be honest, I think we're kind of seeing social media working," one resident stated during the board meeting," one resident said. "I think all of us have dealt with this for years, but you always think it's just you, and it's so depressing and you're sweeping the water down the drain. But you (talking to another resident in the room) posted on next door, and all of a sudden, all these other people started to respond and say, 'Yeah, me too.'"
