(WBEN) The Erie County Water Authority has issued a boil water order for some customers in the towns of Orchard Park and Aurora after a water main break in Elma disrupted service.

Customers in the affected areas should bring tap water to a rolling boil and let it boil for one minute before cooling it for use.

As of Wednesday morning a system refill is underway. Crews in Elma worked overnight to complete repairs. They were able to begin the process of refilling the municipal water system just before midnight.

Two million gallons of water need to be returned to storage tanks and distribution lines across the Town of Elma. The town says residents "should expect conditions to continue improving gradually over the next several hours." That statement was released at 5 a.m. Wednesday.

Crews have opened several fire hydrants to help restore water flow and remove air from the system. The Town asks if you see an open hydrant not to disturb it.

As water service resumes, Elma officials say residents should expect possible air in water lines, cloudy or discolored water and temporary pressure fluctuations.

Bottled water will be distributed to Elma residents Wednesday morning from 9-11 at the following locations:

Elma Volunteer Fire Company
3007 Bowen Road, Elma, NY

Jamison Road Volunteer Fire Company
1071 Jamison Road, Elma, NY

The areas impacted in the town of Orchard Park include:

  • Willardshire and Stonybrook Roads from the Elma town line to 190 Stonybrook Road.

The areas impacted in the town of Aurora include:

  • The area between Bowen Road to the west, the Elma Town line to the north and the Village of East Aurora lines to the east and south.
  • The area between Girdle Road to the west, the Elma Town line to the north,
  • NYS Rt. 400 to east and the Village of East Aurora line to the south.

Boiled water should be used for drinking, cooking, making ice, washing dishes and brushing teeth. Bottled water may also be used instead of boiled tap water.
