Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - It's been a year like no other for journalism.

The COVID pandemic, combined with a highly polarized political environment, has challenged newsrooms nationwide to challenge their organizations to serve their communities with meaningful, inciteful and impacting journalism.

In handing out their prestigious Regional Edward R. Murrow journalism awards, the Radio Television Digital News Association honored the WBEN News Team with three of the coveted awards.

WBEN won in the Breaking News category for coverage of the protest in front of Buffalo City Hall during which demonstrator Martin Gugino was knocked to the ground by Buffalo Police and severely injured. The expansive coverage of the events began with LIVE coverage on the evening of the demonstration followed by extensive interviews and perspective on the events leading up to and immediately following the incident.

The RTDNA also awarded WBEN a Regional Murrow for its extensive digital news coverage, including content on wben.com as well as the station's social media pages on Twitter and Facebook.

WBEN was also awarded the highest recognition in the Overal Excellence category which takes into account the full body of work from WBEN.

The Radio Television Digital News Association has been honoring outstanding achievements in electronic journalism with the Edward R. Murrow Awards since 1971. Award recipients demonstrate the spirit of excellence that Murrow set as a standard for the profession of broadcast and digital journalism.
