Amherst, NY (WBEN) - Western New York's two biggest supermarkets are updating their masking policies to reflect the new rules in New York State.
Both Wegmans and Tops Friendly Markets said on Wednesday that masks will be optional for shoppers who are fully vaccinated, ending the requirement that has stood for the past year.
Unvaccinated shoppers are still required to wear a mask, but it's unclear if there will be any enforcement. Target, CVS, Walmart, Trader Joe's, BJ's Wholesale, and Starbucks have all adopted similar policies.
Governor Cuomo said it's up to businesses and venues to decide how to check someone's vaccination status. Restaurants, stores, gyms and many other businesses can go back to 100% capacity in New York, but only if they check vaccination cards or apps for proof that all patrons have been inoculated.
