Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Athletes from Greater Buffalo Adaptive Sports were donated 10 brand new "Handcycles" from West Herr Automotive and the Scott Bieler Family Foundation.
Handcycles, also called adaptive bikes, have three wheels and pedaling mechanism that is hand controlled.
West Herr's President and CEO Scott Bieler felt it was important to donate these adaptive bikes, and didn't have a second thought about signing off on them.
"A few months ago with the ride for Roswell, I came across 10 riders on these adaptive bikes, and the man that had provided those bikes - his organization did - named Norm Page. He was with them when they stopped at our rest stop on the ride," said Bieler in an interview with WBEN. "I saw the joy in these riders and how much they were getting to do something they couldn't do before without a bike like this, they can't ride a bike, and this provided them the way to ride a bike."
Three-time sledge hockey Paralympic gold medalist Adam Page is thrilled to see this type of equipment being donated, and available for use by the community.
"This community has been amazing, and West Herr has been amazing to the community, and to us. It just shows that whatever disability or setback that you do have, that there is something out there for you, and you'll be able to do that," said Page with WBEN. "That's kind of what we're continuing to try to do. Get as much adaptive things that our community can do, and just grow that so that we're we're hitting every part of this community and getting them out there and being active."
