Tonawanda, N.Y. (WBEN) - While winter is not quite over in Western New York, with temperatures finally surpassing the freezing mark for the first time in nearly a month, many residents made the trek to their local car wash to freshen up a bit and get their rides looking good as new.
"It's about to be 40 degrees today, so I'm feeling 30 degrees better than I did yesterday," said Dale from Buffalo." There's gonna be a ton of people out today. I wanted to get here early, because I know the car wash is gonna be extremely crowded. Everybody wants to get the undercarriages clean, all that dust and everything off. I got here good now, so I'm gonna get in, get dry, get out. It's filling up really quickly."
"It's been a long stretch of cold weather with a lot of salt on the car, so felt this was a good day with the temperature finally getting over 32," added Kyle from the Town of Tonawanda.
It has been a long wait for many to get a chance to get their cars a quick wash, or even a vacuuming out of the inside this winter.
"Probably a good month, because I've got another car at home that needs it too. I'll be bringing that out too," said Mark from Kenmore.
For others, they attempted to get to the car wash sooner, but were unable to get through for one reason or another.
"I was here maybe last week, and as soon as I got up to the front gate, right before it goes to lift up, they shut it down. They said it's too cold," Dale said with WBEN. "I had waited in line for like, a half an hour, so it's been over a week since I've been able to get the car washed. And I almost didn't want to drive it, it looked it so bad. You see it's a black car, but you could've mistaken it for a white car about a week ago."
"I actually came the other day, but it was so crowded that I decided to come back today. I find the mornings are a little better to get out here and get it done," Kyle added with WBEN.
For a number of residents, the little warm up with temperatures is a welcome sight after a stretch of brutally cold temperatures.
"It feels like spring. 29 degrees feels like spring after 19 or 9 the other day. It feels great. It's good to be out here and get some things done," Mark said with WBEN.
"Compared to what it's been, it's nice to be able to actually be outside for more than 20 minutes without shivering and shaking. So it's great," Dale added. "Western New York, I love the winters here, but this one was a little more brutal lately than it's been probably in a while. But it looks like it's shaping back up, so I'm excited."
While many are hopeful this little warm up is a sign of warmer days to come with spring on the way, they know Western New York can certainly spring some unexpected surprises.
"We live in Buffalo and I've been here all my life. So I know some things can still come in late February or early March as well," Kyle said.
"I like to see the glass half full, so I'll say maybe. But the way it's looking, I think we might have a span of space where we have some time, but I think it's gonna make a comeback," Dale added.
