Buffalo, NY (WBEN) Now that Christmas has come and gone, some are looking at ways to recycle the tree they've lit up for weeks. In the city of Buffalo, there are two options for residents to responsibly dispose of trees.

Buffalo Recycling Coordinator Bridget Houck says there are two options for city residents. "They can either go to GeiterDone of Western New York, the city of Buffalo yard waste contractor. That way you can ensure your tree is composted, or you can put your tree Christmas trees curbside. And you can put them out on your regular trash day," says Houck.

Houck says you can put your tree curbside on your regular trash day, while it might not be picked up at the same time trash is collected. If you go to GeiterDone, you are ensuring that your tree will be composted. "This way, the tree will be able to come back to the city of Buffalo and be in our gardens instead of going to a landfill where unfortunately, if they are put in a plastic bag, then they won't be able to break down properly," she explains.

Houck says you can show proof of residency to GeiterDone and you are able to get up to five gallon buckets of compost.
