Hamburg, N.Y. (WBEN) - The McKinley Mall in Hamburg is, once again, up for sale.

It was announced back in March that the 75-acre property was up for sale after Kohan Retail Investment Group bought the mall for $8.5 million in a sale finalized in 2021.

Bidding was set to open for the mall on April 17, but has since been pushed back by a month with a three-day auction being conducted May 15-17. A starting bid of $3 million has been requested.

Meanwhile, The Buffalo News reports the Seneca Nation is planning on entering a bid for the McKinley Mall when bidding opens on May 15. According to the report, Benderson Development Co. is also expected to place a bid on the site.

Town of Hamburg Supervisor Randy Hoak is eagerly looking forward to seeing who takes an interest to the mall this time around.

"I'm glad to see it," said Hoak on Tuesday of the impending sale of the McKinley Mall. "I think that property has a lot of potential, and I'm excited to see who's gonna step up to bid on that property."

While Hoak does not have the full knowledge of who may have an interest in purchasing the mall, he does know Benderson Development has interest, given they own a lot of property adjacent to its location.

Hoak says the parcel of land that houses the McKinley Mall has a great deal of potential given its location in Hamburg on McKinley Parkway and near Milestrip Road and Southwestern Boulevard.

"It's a gateway into the Town of Hamburg, it's conveniently located by the Thruway, by the City of Buffalo. It'll be even closer to the new Bills stadium, as the stadium moved towards Hamburg. There's a lot of opportunity for development right there at the McKinley Mall."

Hoak further adds developers could get quite creative with the new stadium coming to Orchard Park as a potential site for entertainment use and hotels less than three miles from the site. However, it doesn't just stop with the McKinley Mall site.

"We certainly see increased interest in parcels in the Town of Hamburg that are in close proximity to the Bills stadium and, of course, the future Bills stadium," Hoak said. "I think that will translate to more interest in the McKinley Mall property because it is so close."

What more would Hoak like to see with the McKinley Mall site, if and when it sells to the right buyer?

"I'd like to see a use that will maximize the potential of that property," he said. "That could be a residential use, it could be a mixed use. We have an incentive zoning district that covers them all, so developers can get creative with their ideas. And the town is ready and willing to work with them."
