Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - President Trump's Big Beautiful Bill may have an impact on what car Americans will purchase. One of the legislation’s provisions would let taxpayers deduct up to $10,000 annually off auto loan interest for vehicles assembled in the United States.
President of the Niagara Frontier Automobile Dealers Association Paul Stasiak says there are many brands that are made in the United States.
"We're talking about American made cars. We're not just talking about American brand names, and I think this is going to be important, because there are a lot of vehicles that people think are import manufacturers that are produced in the United States, and they have a good percent of the content," Stasiak says.
"I think the public should automatically not assume that it's the big three because if you look across the board, there are a lot of plants in Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, that are our non big three manufacturers. So do I think the consumers will look a little bit more for vehicles that have imports or not? I still think that will have an impact, but it's ultimately going to boil down to the price."
Stasiak adds that it would be too early to tell if more people are going to buy cars, and people should do a little homework on what kind of car they will want to buy.
"I don't think the general public realizes the amount of vehicles that are assembled here, with the amount of U.S. content on the vehicle," Stasiak says. "So I think that's something that, as a person who represents and works with all dealers, should once again make the consumer aware that they have to just do a little homework, and they always do, but don't just assume, because it's got this [certain] name plate, that it's going to be more expensive."
