Buffalo, NY (WBEN) The Buffalo Police officer hospitalized after being wounded during a pursuit last week has been released from ECMC. Officer Joseph McCarthy was one of three officer wounded.
Dr. Jeff Brewer treated McCarthy. "He had a single gunshot to the abdomen, and some injury to his bowel," says Brewer. He would not go further citing privacy concerns. He says it's hectic when gunshot patients come in, and there were concerns there would be multiple patients, but in the end only McCarthy and suspect Kente Bell needed surgery.
Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia was present for the release. "We're very pleased Officer McCarthy is going home to continue his journey of healing. He expresses his gratitude to everyone who cared for him," says Gramaglia. He says there has also been a lot of community support, and today is an uplifting day. As far as the investigation goes, he says that's still in progress.
Officers Christopher Wilson and Trevor Sheehan were previously treated and released from the hospital.
Suspect Kente Bell remains hospitalized. He is charged with attempted murder among other counts.
