FRANKFORT (WWJ) - Kentucky's Governor Andy Beshear says it will be years before the state recovers from the devastating flooding.
WKYT reports the death toll from the natural disaster has reached at least 37. Hundreds remain missing after heavy rains cascaded into valleys and contributed to mudslides on the surrounding hills.
“People left with absolutely nothing. Homes that we don’t know where they are, just entirely gone. And we continue to find bodies of our brothers and sisters that we have lost,” Beshear shared.
At the height of the flooding, 24,000 people were without power.
Federal aid from the Biden administration will assist with the recovery efforts in 13 counties in eastern Kentucky. Beshear expects more counties to be added to the list.
The Red Cross is on the ground moving residents into shelters and providing medial and mental health services.
