A 22-year-old Kentucky man is behind bars after he allegedly tried to kill his mother during an argument over an Xbox controller on Mother's Day.

Jacob Small is facing charges of attempted murder, assault and criminal mischief in connection with the incident, which occurred Sunday in Monticello, near the border with Tennessee.

Small is accused of shooting his mom in a dispute that began after he gave her an Xbox controller as a Mother's Day gift, according to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.

Although details of the argument have not been revealed, investigators say it centered on the controller Small had given his mom.

Following the argument, Small's mother left the house with another woman, police said. As their car was driving away, Small allegedly went outside and fired into the vehicle with his .22-caliber rifle, striking his mother.

The mother was treated at the Wayne County Hospital, then transferred to the University of Kentucky Hospital for further treatment, according to police. Her condition is unknown at this time.

Small remains in custody at the Wayne County Detention Center.
