Phone number changes coming for 716 area code in October

Phone

BUFFALO (WBEN) - The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is currently a 10-digit number (800-273-8255), but the FCC is in the process of implementing a new number (988) to make the helpline more accessible and easier to remember.

However, this change is going to cause adjustments for residents in more than 80 area codes across the country, including the (716) area code.

Essentially, these areas codes were identified as containing seven-digit numbers that begin with 988, and obviously, this would cause issues for people trying to reach those numbers because they would be immediately directed to the helpline.

To help solve the problem, residents with 716 numbers will soon be required to include the area code even when making local calls.

"What they're doing is implementing this process to transition to a 10-digit dialing requirement for certain communities, which also includes here, our area code of 716," said Jessica Pirro, CEO of Crisis Services.

Starting Saturday, April 24, it's recommended to people within these specific area codes to begin the process and training of exclusively utilizing 10-digit numbers. However, it remains only a suggestion for now, as it will be fully required starting October 24. Those who fail to dial the 10-digit requirement past that date could have their calls dropped.

"The goal is to have this all ready so when the 988 number goes live in July of 2022, there aren't any errors with people trying to call 988 or any individuals with phone numbers starting with 988 getting calls that are emergency calls," said Pirro. "We would encourage people...as you're adding contacts or going through contacts in your phone, you may want to start making those edits."
