Both outbound and inbound air traffic out of both Buffalo and Niagara Falls' airports has been impacted by Friday afternoon's freezing rain, ice and sleet.
Many flights have either been delayed or canceled, said Helen Tederous, NFTA spokesperson.
In the case of Niagara Falls International Airport, an 186-passenger Airbus 320 operated by Allegiant Air was towed back to the terminal and de-iced as was the airport's runway.
The flight, bound for Punta Gorda, Fla., is expected to take off later Friday.
"In that situation, the pilot exercised extreme caution," Tederous said. "There was some pretty intense freezing."
De-icing planes and the runways at both airports is a fairly procedure during the winters.
Buffalo is highly regarded within commercial airport circles for its handling of winter weather and that's why the NFTA annually hosts a snow removal symposium for fellow airport operators.
Tederous recommended anyone who has an outbound flight and waiting to greet an inbound flight should check with the NFTA's website for air traffic information.
