Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Another windy weekend for the Buffalo and Western New York region as severe thunderstorms rolled through the region Saturday afternoon.
National Weather Service meteorologists say a deep storm system passing by to our north today pushed a pair of cold fronts across the region through Saturday night. The first of these generated gusty showers and thunderstorms Saturday afternoon as severe thunderstorms cross the area.
Winds will also be a factor today with wind gusts reaching 40 to 50 mph in many areas.
Meteorologists say Mother Nature played an April Fools joke on us in the form of clearing skies and mild temperatures early Saturday, but those conditions are exactly what led to the gusty winds and severe weather later in the day Saturday.
"The Storm Prediction Center has kept the bulk of our forecast area in a slight risk area for severe storms," National Weather Service forecasters say. "The primary concern with the storms was straight line winds during Saturday afternoon.
The 2nd half of the weekend will be calmer and quieter, forecasters say. Temperatures will remain on the cooler side Sunday with highs in the mid to upper 30s with a few locations across the far Southern Tier and Genesee Valley reaching the low 40s.
