After record breaking numbers of new COVID-19 cases over the weekend, North Carolina reported 1,827 new cases on Monday for a total of 87,528. South Carolina, which also had a record high number of new cases over the weekend, added another 1,532 for a total of 58,003. North Carolina has had 20 consecutive days of at least 1,000 new cases.

Other states in the South also are reporting spikes. Florida has had nearly 28,000 new cases over just the past two days. Tennessee had a record single day increase of 3,314 cases Monday.

The rate of positive COVID-19 tests in South Carolina Sunday was 21.2%. North Carolina’s positive rate was 10%, and has been in the 8 to 10% range for the past several weeks. North Carolina COVID-19 related hospitalizations declined for a second consecutive day, down 30 to 1,040. However, only 80% of hospitals reported their data to the state Monday. South Carolina has 1,488 current hospitalizations due to coronavirus.

North Carolina health officials say 67,124 people are presumed to have recovered from COVID-19 in the state. That’s estimating a median 14 day recovery time for those with COVID-19 who were not hospitalized, and 28 days for those who were hospitalized. Actual recovery times of course vary depending on the severity of illness.
