One-Day COVID-19 Case Record Set In South Carolina

The number of new COVID-19 cases in North Carolina was 2,481 on Saturday, but decreased to 1,820 new cases announced on Sunday for a total of 99,778. In South Carolina, after the number of new coronavirus cases increased by 1,481 on Saturday, they jumped 2,335 on Sunday, the most since the pandemic started and a total of 69,765.

South Carolina also reported an additional 19 deaths for a total of 1,138. There were 5 COVID-19 related deaths in North Carolina, with a total of 1,634. The number of coronavirus-related hospitalizations declined both Saturday and Sunday in North Carolina and is currently 1,115.

Hospitalization numbers are not available in South Carolina as they transition to reporting the numbers to a new Department of Health and Human Services database instead of the CDC. Officials say once the new system has sufficient participation and accuracy, they will report from it.

The rate of positive tests in South Carolina remains high at 18.4%, but it had been over 20% earlier in the week. In North Carolina on Saturday there were around 23,000 tests completed, with a positive rate of 9%, the same as the previous day.

Mecklenburg County reported an additional 332 COVID-19 cases Sunday for a total of 17,379. No new deaths were reported in the county, which has had a total of 170. Wake County has the second highest number of COVID-19 cases in the state with 8,768 along with 89 deaths. Guilford County has the second highest number of coronavirus related deaths in the state with 132.
