A lot of news has been coming out of the sports world lately. Between the playoff in the NBA and NHL to the NFL season on the horizon, there's not a shortage of hot topics making headlines. A news story fresh on the mind of Gerry Vaillancourt was the passing of John Thompson yesterday. 'Gerry V' joined WBT's Morning News with Bo Thompson on Tuesday to reflect on the life of the legendary basketball coach.
"The best conversation I had with (John) was when he was out of coaching," Vaillancourt recalled. "He was a man you had to pay attention to when you were with him. Because he was one, outspoken. Incredibly blunt and honest. He had an amazing laugh. And if you asked him a question, don't be afraid of the answer."
Thompson took the Hoyas to 20 NCAA tournament appearances with three trips to the Final Four and was the first black coach to win a National Championship in 1984. He was 78.
'Gerry V' was featured on a recent WBT's century podcast with Bo Thompson. Visit WBT.com to hear the interview and the latest rewind episode celebrating 100 years for the "great colossus of the south."
