Mark Robinson entered the world of politics as an underdog. The one-time furniture factory worker saw an opportunity to help fix the broken pieces of our democracy and represent the working class of North Carolina.
As Greensboro native stood in front of the media shortly after being introduced as the state’s first Black lieutenant governor-elect and his message was clear: Robinson is ready to get to work for you.
The Republican first-time, non-conventional candidate had a tough road to get where he's at now. He won 51% of the vote against Democratic challenger Yvonne Lewis Holley with support from the GOP and the millions of followers across the state. Robinson was put in the position not only to work for conservatives, but for everyone in the Tar Heel state. That starts with reaching across the aisle with a common sense approach.
"The first thing I'm going to say to Governor Cooper is I hope there are things we can work together on," Robinson told WBT's Pat McCrory Show with Bo Thompson Friday.
"There are some issues that I think we can come together on to make the lives of our citizens here better. But, with that being said, I'm not willing to compromise any of my principals in order just to go along to get along."
Robinson openly embraces the controversial right-wing ideologies and stands firm on his positions with a straight-forward approach that American is great with everyone working towards a common goal. Before his run for lieutenant governor, Robinson gained recognition with a moment in front of the Greensboro City Council meeting with a defense of the right to bear arms.
His political appeal quickly grew into a successful campaign. One topic all elected officials will be faced with is developing a plan to deal with the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. Robinson says people need to exercise freedom and responsibility during this time.
"Business owners need to be able to run their businesses. And I believe that business owners are smart enough to do this. To keep their businesses open. To keep their customers safe and keep their employees safe. I have 100-percent confidence in North Carolina business owners."
