President Donald Trump is set to host a rally today at Gastonia Municipal Airport and Jon Boyd, of the Gaston Municipal Airport, told WBTV Tuesday the rally is expecting between 15,000 and 30,000 to attend.
“I wasn’t here when the call came in but I was quickly notified that they were doing the presidential rally here and I jokingly thought it was a hoax," Boyd told the station.
North Carolina is seeing some of it’s highest reported cases since the pandemic began.
But a Trump campaign spokesperson told the station attendees will have their temperature checked and will be provided a mask they’ll be instructed to wear for the duration of the event.
Boyd told WBTV he hopes the Trump team follows those protocols.
“With the current COVID-19 growth it’s better to be on the safe side," he told the station.
The state’s department of health reported over 1,500 new cases Tuesday and the president himself was recently hospitalized after testing positive for the Coronavirus.
Since being released, he’s returned to the campaign trail and is expected to attend a debate with Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden Thursday.
