California Gov. Gavin Newsom apologized Monday for a dinner engagement at a Napa Valley restaurant with people from other households, saying his behavior contradicted the spirit of the safety guidelines and precautions he has asked Californians to adhere to during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The latest "Do as I say, not as I do" example from the an elected official is yet another reason to question some people's character. This was not a flaw in judgement. Newsome was caught up in working around the guidelines that he put in place to fight the deadly Coronavirus pandemic.
Good for his business and not your business, right?
"I want to apologize to you because I need to preach and practice, not just preach and not practice, and I've done my best to do that," Newsom said. "We're all human. We all fall short sometimes."
On the same day the governor discussed his own behavior, he reversed plans to reopen part of California and ordered 28 counties to return to the purple tier — 94% of Californians will be under the state's most restrictive guidelines as of Tuesday.
President-Elect Biden should consider him and Nancy Pelosi for the post of top COVID-19 hypocrite in his cabinet. They're both well-qualified for their action during this ongoing pandemic. And it's a shame both represent California with the same mindset. We can do better than having these two in public office.
