North Carolina Football moves into top five; highest ranking in 23 years

It was only a matter of time before Mack Brown would have North Carolina back in the national conversation. The Tar Heels (3-0) moved to No. 5 in this week's AP Top 25 poll. The highest ranking for UNC since 1997 which was Brown's last year during his previous tenure at Chapel Hill before spending 16 years at Texas.

Michael Carter rushed for a career-high 214 yards and Javonte Williams added another 169 on the ground in the Tar Heel's 56-45 win over No. 19 Virgina Tech on Saturday at Kenan Stadium. UNC racked up 656 yards of total offense and tied the mark for most points in a game in three seasons.

The top-ranked Clemson Tigers reigned supreme for another week in the poll. The defending ACC champs were followed by No. 2 Alabama, who outlasted Mississippi with a 63-48 win on Saturday night. Third-ranked Georgia took care of No. 14 Tennessee to stay in the top three with a 44-21 win. The Bulldogs were followed by ACC fill-in Notre Dame at No. 4 and UNC to round out the top five.
