NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Beginning Friday, Arthur Ashe Stadium will be home to a different kind of sporting event.

Instead of the world’s greatest tennis stars, dozens of the best gamers will be heading to Flushing Meadows for Epic Games’ “Fortnite World Cup.”

Over the course of 10 weeks, the tournament narrowed down 40 million people who competed for a chance to play in the Cup to just 100 competitors.

Those players will now journey to Queens from all over the world to battle over a $30 million prize pool.

Nearly every player will walk away with at least $50,000. The runner-up, third and fourth-place finishers will each walk away with $1 million. The winner takes home $3 million.

The Cup comes as “Fortnite” has begun to lose significant momentum as users continue to complain about issues like long waiting times and constant map changes.

The Epic Games tournament is considered the biggest e-sporting event to date.
