Since 1988, I’ve had the best seat in the house. I’m privileged to get the kind of view of New York that many people can only dream about. And I’m humbled by how many of you tell me I helped you. I really appreciate that. I’m a very fortunate guy, in many ways.

If I had to come up with three words that describe the things I’ve seen over these years, they would have to be: heartbreak, heroes, and hope. The stories of heartbreak are endless. A tragic fire, an awful collision, a person standing on a bridge who isn’t sure whether that moment will be his last. Then there are the heroes who rescue someone from that burning building, pry the injured driver out of that car, and give that guy on the bridge a chance to talk to someone. That’s where the hope shines in, and is victorious, every time.

For me, and for millions of people just like me, September 11, 2001 rolled heartbreak, heroes and hope into one memory. I flew in Chopper 880 for over 10 years before that horrible day, I flew as the horror unfolded in front of me, and I’ve been flying nearly every day since. I can tell you, unequivocally: hope shines in, and is victorious. Every time. You don’t have to be looking at New York from 1000 feet to know that.
