NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — The Lincoln Tunnel will no longer accept cash for tolls starting Sunday.

As part of the last step in a $500 million dollar project to modernize toll collecting in all of the Port Authority’s bridges and tunnels, the Lincoln Tunnel follows the George Washington Bridge with getting rid of toll collectors.

Tolls will now be collected through electronic payments via E-ZPass or through billing the toll by mail with a picture of your license plate.

The $16 dollar toll will include a $50 fee for late payment for those without an E-ZPass.

According to the Port Authority, the new system will save drivers over one million gallons of fuel a year and reduce over 11,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually through the elimination of lanes and booths.

The agency said the move is also a “win-win” for drivers as it shortens their commutes and reduces accidents.

Last month, the Port Authority announced an increase in toll prices on local bridges and tunnels citing a loss of $3 billion during the pandemic. Tolls will increase by one dollar to reflect the high rate of inflation.
